Een onderzoeksteam van de Universiteit van Jena
brengt het mechanisme achter gliotoxine [2] in kaart. Gliotoxine is
een mycotoxine [3] van de schimmel Aspergillus fumigatus [4]. De schimmel [5] bevindt zich overal en is
buitengewoon gevaarlijk voor mensen met een verzwakte afweer. De
schimmel Aspergillus fumigatus komt bijna overal op aarde voor. Het
openbaart zich als een donkergrijze, gerimpelde deken op vochtige
muren of als microscopisch kleine sporen die door de lucht
meegevoerd worden en zich vastklampen aan behang, matrassen en
vloeren.
Schimmel toxines in de lucht veroorzaken gezondheidsrisico’s
Toxines die geproduceerd worden door drie verschillende schimmels
die binnenshuis op behang groeien kunnen vernevelen en gemakkelijk
ingeademd worden. “We hebben aangetoond dat mycotoxines kunnen worden overgebracht
van een beschimmeld materiaal naar de omgevingslucht, onder
omstandigheden die je tegenkomt in gebouwen,” zei mede-auteur
Jean-Denis Bailly, DVM, PhD, Professor of Food Hygiene, National
Veterinary School of Toulouse in Frankrijk.
'Gemaskeerde' schimmel toxinen in levensmiddelen
moeten worden opgenomen in de veiligheidsvoorschriften
Overheidsmaatregelen op schimmeltoxinen van
nature aanwezig in graan gewassen zouden moeten uitgebreid
worden tot de zogenaamde "gemaskeerde mycotoxinen" die
veranderen van onschadelijk naar potentieel schadelijke vormen
in het lichaam, concludeert een nieuwe studie gepubliceerd in
het ACS tijdschrift Chemical Research in Toxicology. Chiara
Dall'Asta en collega's leggen uit dat schimmels die op
natuurlijke wijze op tarwe, maïs en andere planten voorkomen
giftige stoffen produceren, mycotoxinen genoemd. Sommige
gezondheidsexperts beschouwen mycotoxinen als de meest ernstige
chronische voedingsrisicofactor, groter dan de potentiële
bedreigingen voor de gezondheid van pesticiden en insecticiden.
Regelgeving van de overheid beperkt het mycotoxinegehalte dat is
toegestaan in levensmiddelen en diervoeders. Planten
beschermen zich door het binden van glucose, zwavel of andere
stoffen aan de mycotoxine en produceren zo chemisch gebonden
mycotoxinen die niet schadelijk zijn.
Al veel jaren staat Candida albicans in de
belangstelling van de natuurgeneeskunde. Lange tijd is het Candida-syndroom een omstreden
diagnose geweest. Recente wetenschappelijke inzichten laten zien dat deze buitengewone
gist echter wel degelijk in staat is om een negatieve bijdrage te leveren aan allerlei
gezondheidsproblemen, echter zonder dat Candida zich door het lichaam verspreidt. In dit

Resistente Schimmels door Chemische

In Nederland overlijden jaarlijks
tientallen ernstig verzwakte patiënten door agressieve schimmelinfecties. Die zijn vaak
niet te bestrijden doordat ze resistent zijn tegen geneesmiddelen. Dat blijkt uit een
jaarlijks onderzoek. Tot voor kort kwam dit soort resistente schimmels nauwelijks voor in
Nederland, nu zitten ze op grote schaal in het milieu. Ze zijn resistent doordat de stof
in de geneesmiddelen ertegen ook wordt gebruikt in de landbouw, in verf en in
beschermlagen van matrassen. Voor leukemiepatiënten en andere mensen met een sterk
verzwakt afweersteem zijn de schimmels daardoor levensbedreigend.

interactie met ergosterol in schimmelmembranen
De werking van het polyeenantibioticum
natamycine is niet gebaseerd op het lekprikken van membranen, maar op de interactie met
ergosterol in schimmelmembranen. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Yvonne te Welscher. De
laatste jaren zijn schimmelinfecties in toenemende mate een gevaar voor de gezondheid gaan
vormen en daarbij levensbedreigend voor patienten met een laag immuunsysteem. In
tegenstelling tot andere antibiotica is er tegen de polyeenantibiotica nog weinig
resistentie waargenomen. Natamycine is een familielid van de polyeenantibiotica, welke
veel wordt toegepast als conserveringsmiddel en geneesmiddel. Echter, het
werkingsmechanisme is nog niet bekend. Verrassend genoeg bleek, in tegenstelling tot
andere polyeenantibiotica, het werkingmechanisme van natamycine niet gebaseerd op het lek
maken van het omhulsel van een cel (het membraan). Toch is natamycine in staat via een
specifieke interactie met ergosterol in het membraan de groei van schimmels te remmen. Te
Welscher toonde aan dat natamycine via de interactie met ergosterol in het membraan in
staat is eiwitten te remmen die onder andere belangrijk zijn in de fusie van membranen.
Doordat andere familieleden van de polyeenantibiotica ook een interactie hebben met
ergosterol, is het mogelijk dat deze antibiotica op dezelfde wijze werken als natamycine
en daarbij in combinatie met het lek maken van membranen een 'dubbel werkingsmechanisme'
hebben.

People living in a moldy home may be more likely to suffer from depression, according to a
new study conducted by researchers from the Brown School of Medicine in Providence, R.I.,
and published in the American Journal of Public Health. Researchers examined data from
World Health Organization interviews of 5,882 adults residing in eight different European
cities. They found that those who lived in damp, moldy homes were more likely to report
symptoms of depression, including sleep disturbances and lowered appetite or self-esteem.
The tenant, Kathryn Remington, 51, said moldy conditions in her apartment have given her
migraine headaches and made her cough up blood. She has sent spore samples to be tested at
a laboratory and grown seven different fungi in petri dishes, including some reputedly
toxic molds. She has extensively photographed the problem and has been prescribed
antibiotics for mold-related illness by two doctors.
Some of the naturopaths suggest using simple vapor rubs as simplest way to cure fingernail
infection. However, there are no researches, studies or clinical trials, but vapor rubs
